Montana Synod LMA Program
(Lay Ministry Associate)
A Lay Ministry Associate (formally called a Lay Pastoral Associate) in the Montana Synod is a congregational lay person who has received religious and educational training through the Montana Synod to provide (in most cases) short-term pulpit supply when the pastor is away, or if a congregation is without a pastor. In addition to preaching, their role is to perform basic pastoral duties, such as presiding over communion, caring for souls within their congregation, and other tasks as approved by the Bishop. LMAs are not authorized to preside at weddings.
